Margaret River's reef is, in Beachsafe's words, "one of the world's great lefts," so it might seem an odd place to learn. But the region has gentler beaches too, and the local schools pick a spot to suit the conditions. Here's what we found, from Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe pages and school websites checked on 17 October 2026.
The beaches
Gnarabup and the Margaret River beach (Prevelly). Beachsafe rates Gnarabup Beach 3 out of 10, one of the lowest ratings in this whole series, and says it "usually has low waves lapping against the steep beach." The Margaret River beach nearby is "relatively safe under normal conditions," though Beachsafe warns about a rip against the southern rocks and a shorebreak once waves pass a metre. The famous reef break out the front is for watching, not for your first lesson.
Yallingup. Rated 7 out of 10 overall. But Beachsafe says the southern reef beach is "the least hazardous location as it is usually free of waves and rips," with waves and rips increasing north of the main car park.
Smiths Beach. Rated 7 out of 10. Beachsafe calls it "one of the most popular surfing beaches in the area" and says south of the creek is safer and patrolled in summer.
The takeaway: this coastline is powerful, so learning with a local school that picks the right beach on the day really matters here.
What lessons cost
- Margaret River Surf School: $65 per person for a group lesson, $150 for three or $230 for five. Individual lessons are $160.
- Yallingup Surf School: $65 per person for a group lesson (minimum three people), individual lessons from $125 for an hour, private lessons for two at $150 for an hour, and a three day course at $165 per person.
So group lessons in the Margaret River region sit at about $65, and private lessons for one run $125 to $160. The multi-lesson packs at both schools bring the per-lesson price down to around $46 to $55.
Kids vs adults
Kids: Margaret River Surf School runs a three day SurfGroms course for kids aged 5 to 12, from $180. Yallingup Surf School has "microgrom" lessons for kids 10 and under, $110 one on one, $65 per child for two and $55 per child for three.
Adults: the standard group lesson is the place to start. Yallingup's private group option ($80 per person, minimum three) is great for families or a few mates who want an instructor to themselves.
Ages: check minimum ages with each school. Group and private lessons often have different age limits, and kids' programs are usually split by age.
What's included, and what to bring
Margaret River Surf School's group lesson page lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before your session, which is handy given how much the conditions can change down here. Check what each school includes in the price, especially wetsuits.
Bring swimmers, a towel, sunscreen and water. If you're doing a multi-day course, it's worth bringing a second set of swimmers so you're not pulling on damp ones the next morning.
Your first session. Expect a safety briefing on the beach, practice on the sand, then time in the white water on a soft board. Yallingup Surf School's pricing page notes that a 1.5 hour session includes a half hour briefing and setup, so you're not in the water the whole time. That's normal and it's time well spent.
Tips
- If you're making the trip down south, book a three or five lesson pack. You'll get far more out of it.
- Location usually depends on the swell. Yallingup Surf School says so on its pricing page.
- Never paddle out at a reef break as a beginner. Watch from the shore and save it for later.
