Newcastle is a proper surf town. Beachsafe notes Newcastle Beach has hosted many surf contests, and Merewether is a world champion's home beach. It's also a coastline with real energy, so picking the right spot and the right lesson matters. Here's what we found, using Surf Life Saving's Beachsafe info and school websites checked on 17 October 2026.
The beaches
Nobbys. Beachsafe rates Nobbys 6 out of 10. The useful line for beginners: "The headland beach is moderately safe beach in close to shore." It also notes that the main stretch of Nobbys Beach is more exposed, with rips, rocks and reefs, and says to only swim when it's patrolled and between the flags.
Newcastle Beach. Rated 7 out of 10. Beachsafe calls it "a potentially hazardous beach owing to the high waves, rocks and permanent rips." It's a popular spot and has hosted plenty of surf contests, but it's one for later.
Merewether and Bar Beach. Also 7 out of 10. Beachsafe notes Merewether is the home beach of four time world champion Mark Richards. It warns about ever-present rips and suggests the rock pool if you're unsure in the water.
The pattern is pretty clear. Newcastle's city beaches are rated higher for hazard than many learner spots up and down the coast, so a lesson with a local school is the smart first move.
What lessons cost
Newcastle Surfest Surf School lists its prices on the front page:
- Open group lesson: $65 per person, 80 minutes, ages 13 and up, with all equipment and wetsuits
- Private lesson, one on one: $150
- Private lesson for two or more: $75 per person
- Surfboard hire: $35 for two hours
The other Newcastle schools we list, Newcastle Surf School and Philippa Anderson Surf School, take bookings through their own sites, so check there for current rates.
Kids vs adults
Kids: Surfest's private lessons are open to ages 5 and up, so that's the way to go for younger kids. The group lessons start at 13.
Adults and teens: the 80 minute open group is the standard first lesson. If you're learning with a mate or a partner, the two-person private works out at the same $75 each, and you get the coach to yourselves.
Families: a private lesson for a few people at $75 each lets kids under 13 and adults learn together, which the group lessons don't.
What's included, and what your first session looks like
Surfest says its group lessons include all equipment and wetsuits, so you only need swimmers, a towel and sunscreen. Its group sessions are 80 minutes, which is plenty for a first go. Most beginners are pretty tired by the end of it.
Expect to start on the sand with a safety talk. At Newcastle that's especially worth listening to, since Beachsafe rates every main city beach we looked at 6 or 7 out of 10. You'll practise the pop up (lying to standing) on land, then head into the white water on a soft board with your coach close by.
If you love it, Surfest's two-person private rate ($75 each) is an easy way to keep going with a mate, and its board hire ($35 for two hours, or $40 with a wetsuit) lets you practise between lessons.
Tips
- Ask your school which beach it uses. Conditions change a lot between Nobbys and the beaches further south.
- If you hire a board afterwards, stick to patrolled areas and between the flags.
- Beachsafe points to the rock pool at Merewether if you're unsure in the surf.
